We had Drum/dance classes, performances, African Food, home-baked cakes, Fair-trade goods and children's activities corner. We thank all the amazing artists and everybody else for their contribution!

This year we also sadly celebrated the life and spirit of Ousmane Coumbassa, Salif's hugely respected and loved brother, who died after a severe illness on 11th May 2010.

Fair-trade Goods

We now have various fair-trade goods for sale. This includes handmade sandals, necklaces, various small percussion and a very high quality guinean djembe.

We are selling these to directly benefit the producers and to raise a little funds. We did this on various summer festivals, like the Horniman Museum World Festival and of course at Salif Fest.

Djembe manufacture for Kellsal school/2010

Alanouwoly Salifou Sylla arranged an order of djembe drums for a school near Chester and provided them with a photo diary of the making of the drums together with a small section to show life in Africa.
The teacher's wanted to use this project to also teach the children about life in Africa.

Th drums were engraved with the school's logo and together with the photo diary made the whole project quite a personal one.

Caretaker House was finished with a beautiful ceiling and some decoration outside.

Tending of about 25 trees and some groundnut cash-crop was continued throughout the year.

African shower/toilet was built for caretaker and we have started to pay a small wage to our caretaker there. We also had to help with water supply at the end of dry season, as there are no water sources near by.

see House Project for more photos and details.

Salif Fest 12 September 09

We had a lovely day again and we are happy to have covered our cost and made a small profit, which we will spend on our African project. We would like to extend a warm Thank-You to everybody, including the workshop leaders, performers, kitchen workers, organisers and attendees, who have all contributed to make the day a success. This year we had even more home-baked cakes and some performances in African and other styles of Music.

Progress of our Work

see 09 Report Boke from our chair and vice chair about their time in Guinea and the building work there.

For our teaching work 16 beautiful drums, made by Tamala Africa, have been brought from Gambia. Alanouwoly Salifou Sylla is carved into them and we are now promoting our work in schools.

Alanouwoly Salifou Sylla has completed the first school project at Holbeach Primary School with the help of the expertise of the renowned Nansady Keita and it culminated in a very successful performance by the children at the school's summer fair.
The money raised from school fair was used to plant many trees from orange to coconut to avocado on the land in Guinea.

Salif's First Anniversary Commemoration

Salif died in the night of 14 to 15.2.2008.

1. Drumzkool had a free workshop and performance day on 14.2.09 in Colchester and everybody had a lovely day and £155 was collected for Alanouwoly Salifou Sylla and £90 for the drum makers of the Alanouwoly drums.

2. Sacrifice on 15.2.09 in Tamala House in Serrekunda, Gambia. A massive amount of food (->) was cooked and all day people were coming to remember Salif, finishing with big round of prayers and tributes. Everybody was happy and the spirit of Salif seemed definitely present.
